Description:

This desirable antique Colt Single Action Army was manufactured in 1896. Two important or distinctive changes were made during this time; one was that Colt started to use its distinctive "Circled" Rampant Colt logo on the side of the frame, and secondly, around serial number 165,000, they switched from the old style "black powder" frames with a screw through the front to secure the cylinder pin to the new style "smokeless powder" frames using a push button cross-pin in the frame to secure the cylinder pin. The top of the barrel is lightly marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.," and the left side is marked "38 W.C.F." The left side of the frame has the two-line, three-patent date marking followed by the circled Rampant Colt trademark. The matching serial number is marked on the frame, trigger guard and back strap, and the inside of the grips have the matching partial serial number "5367." The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "612". The rear of the frame on the left is marked "3.," and the face of the cylinder has a "7." Standard blade front and frame notch rear sights, blue with casehardened frame and hammer, and fitted with checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the top.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 70% factory refinished blue finish with muzzle and high edge wear, some scattered thinning to gray, a smooth gray patina on the front strap, and cycling scratches on the cylinder. The frame and hammer retain 50% plus bright case colors. The grips remain fine and display an attractive slightly faded coloration and have a few minor dings and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive antique Colt Single Action Army in the popular .38-40 W.C.F. cartridge.
