These derringers were introduced in 1870 and totaled around 48,000 produced. This derringer has gorgeous factory quality engraving on over half of the metal surfaces consisting mainly of highly detailed scrollwork as well as an ornate floral band around the muzzle. It is likely the engraving was executed in Britain by a skilled artisan or the retailer. The right side of the frame in inscribed by the retailer "E.M. REILLY & Co. LONDON. The top of the barrel has a rounded blade front sight and "COLT" in large italic letters and the bottom of the barrel has small British proofs. It is fitted with a pair of smooth grips that are each stamped/branded "894" on the inside. Includes a lightly tool, brown leather wrapped, hard case, cleaning rod/screwdriver, and a .41 RF cartridge.
Very fine, retains 85% of the period, retailer applied, nickel finish with the balance having thinned to either a smooth grey patina or attractively aged brass and crisp engraving overall. The grips are also very fine with some hairline age cracks and an attractively aged tone overall with minimal handling evidence. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with some mild wear and the lid slightly collapsed inward.
