Description:

This gun is featured in "The Visser Collection" Vol. 1, Part 4, as no. 769 on pages 218 and 219. The tapered smoothbore barrel has a brass blade front sight, iron notch rear sight, plain tang, and an "AI" mark on the underside. The barrel marking is that of barrel maker Abraham Janson Coster of Utrecht around 1642-1665. The convex lock is secured by three screws and has an external wheel, automatic pan cover, and the screws coming from the inside. The iron furniture, including the ramrod tip, are engraved with floral scroll patterns and gilded. The rosewood stock is smooth and has a graceful profile. There is a "67" armory mark just behind the trigger guard, and an "HV1231" collection mark in white is at the toe. Provenance: The H.L. Visser Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel and lock display mostly silver-gray patina while the furniture retains a mix of original gilding and dark patina. The lock is not fitting flush. The refinished stock is good and has a spliced toe section, some cracks and repairs, a chip at the nose of the lock, glossy surfaces throughout, and light scratches. Lock not tested. This is an attractive 17th century Dutch wheellock carbine.
