Description:

This classic 18th century Germanic jaeger rifle is signed "ANTONI STEINGASTINGER APRAG" on top of the breech section, similarly signed behind the cock on the lockplate, and marked "No. 887" at the edge of the breech and "2" on the tang. The swamped barrel has seven-groove, round bottom rifling, gilt blade front and notch and folding leaf rear sights with scroll engraving on the finial of the latter, and a bead design at the breech end. The lock has relief battle scenes and scroll patterns. The gilt brass furniture also has scrollwork, military scenes, and three serpent designs on the left stock flat. The stock has a horn forend cap, fine molding, raised relief scroll carving, a nicely shaped cheekpiece, grip extension, stud and swivel for a sling, and a wood patchbox lid with grooved design. Provenance: The Tom Lewis Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine with crisp markings and designs throughout, mottled gray and brown patina and mild oxidation on the lock and barrel, aged patina on the furniture, and general mild overall wear. The otherwise fine stock has a period repaired break visible between the upper ramrod pipes, crisp carving, some small cracks and chips, and general mild dings and scratches. The lock needs some work as it will not hold full-cock.
