Description:

Standing approximately 64 3/4 inches tall, this eye-catching piece was produced as a memorial to Charles Mandeville Schott Jr. (1846-1919), who is known as a generous donor of items to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The base is hexagonal with four ornate feet and a hexagonal central column featuring gothic style vaulted "windows". The column culminates in a crown-style hexagonal ring featuring floral motifs, within which rests a sphere marked "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF/CHARLES MANDEVILLE SCHOTT, JR./1846-1919". On top of the sphere, and a separate attached piece, is perched a massive eagle that has the appearance of having just landed or about to take flight. Charles Schott Jr. is known for having donated over 100 items to the MET upon his death, many of which included arms and armour, some of which are still exhibited to this day.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, the metal showing mostly bright with some areas showing an attractive, very slight antique patina, a few scattered spots of darker patina, and minimal handling/storage evidence. An excellent decor piece associated with one of the world's premier art museums!
