Excellent Documented Smith & Wesson Commercial Model 1917 Double Action Revolver in Extremely Scarce .45 Long Colt

Manufactured directly after the 1917 military contract, these Commercial Model 1917s lack U.S. property markings. This example has a left over U.S. inspected barrel, which is chambered in very scarce .45 LC instead of the more common .45 ACP. The authors of the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" note only "several" examples of this model are known to exist in .45 LC. This is truly a rare S&W revolver which is missing from even the most advanced collections. The accompanying factory letter (copy) confirms the 5 1/2 inch barrel and .45 LC chambering. The letter also states the revolver was shipped to Fred G. Hammond of Canton, New York, on January 14, 1929. A lanyard ring is mounted on the butt, a common feature found on commercial examples. The revolver is wearing original checkered walnut grips. Matching serial numbers are on the butt, right grip panel (in pencil, faint) and barrel.

ConditionExcellent, retaining 97% plus original blue finish showing slight wear on the back strap and at the muzzle. 95% plus original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger. The grips are also excellent with some minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. This is a highly sought after, high condition S&W Commercial Model 1917 Revolver in scarce. 45 LC that is a must have for the serious collector.
