Description:

This very fine Rider Magazine Pistol is pictured and discussed on pages 336-337 of the included copy of "A Life's Tapestry of a Collector: The Gamble Collection" by George F. Gamble and R.L. Wilson. They note the engraving is "in a style suggesting L.D. Nimschke" and attribute the presentation display case to Hartley & Graham. The bottom of the case has a c. 1920s-1930s Remington Arms Company, Inc. "C.O.D. MEMORANDUM" on the bottom noting "Rexroat Bros." of "Virginia, Ills." (listed in the book as "Reprvat" or "Rexrvat" Bros). The label indicates shipment decades after this model had been dropped from production. Brothers George Rexroat Jr. (1888-1969) and Rollo Rexroat (1893-1979) and their sister Verna ran their family's store in Virginia, Illinois, west of the state capital from the 1930s to the 1970s. The business was opened by their father George W. Rexroat Sr. (1862-1942) c. 1896 and was listed in government records as selling groceries and guns. Prior to owning the store, G.W. Rexroat Sr. had a business loading shotgun shells by hand, and he was known as a talented marksman and trap-shooter. He passed the store onto his sons in the 1930s, and it was renamed Rexroat Bros. Fancy Groceries and Hardware and sold a wide variety of goods, including firearms and ammunition as well as antiques. The pistol has "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y./RIDERS PAT. AUG. 15TH. 1871." marked on the barrel, a rounded blade front sight, extensive scroll and border engraving, and smooth grips. The case has a black leather exterior with gilt accent lines, a "G/[anchor]M.F.G. Co" marked latch, and cream color satin lining. Provenance: The George F. Gamble Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% plus original finish, crisp engraving, some light oxidation by the grips, and minimal light handling and storage marks. The grips are also excellent and have attractive natural tones and grain, light scratches, and minor handling wear. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine and has mild age and storage related wear.
