A) Manton & Co. Howdah Pistol

With browned Damascus barrels with stirrup ramrods beneath and concave ribs with bead front sights and signed “MANTON & CO. 116 JERMYN STREET LONDON 4122” in gold. Casehardened patent breeches each with platinum plug and inlaid with two gold lines and engraved with scrollwork on the rib sections. Casehardened scroll engraved standing breeches and bar locks each signed “MANTON” in gold and with safety bolts. Furniture including casehardened foliate engraved trigger plates and blued scroll engraved trigger guards. Figured walnut three quarter length stocks with checkered butts. London proof marks. In fitted mahogany case lined in green baize, the lid with Manton & Co. printed trade label. With some accessories comprising three way brass mounted powder flask, iron 12 bore bullet mold stamped to “MANTON & CO./CALCUTTA”, pewter oiler and brass mounted loading rod with worm.

ConditionFine. The barrels retaining 40% of the older refinished brown with the remainder discolored. The gold inlaid barrel signatures and the gold lock signatures are later. Traces of faded original casehardened finish remains in sheltered areas. The locks and standing breech display a light grey patina and clear engraving. The fine stock is reoiled and has minimal storage and handling blemishes with strong checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has the lining partially replaced and a worn trade label. The accessories are good.

ConditionFine. 40% of the older refinish brown remains on the barrels, and the balance is discolored. The gold inlaid barrel signatures and the gold lock signatures are later, and this pistol was erroneously inlaid with serial number "4122" on the rib. Traces of faded original casehardened finish remain in sheltered areas, and the locks and standing breech display a light grey patina and have distinct engraving. The fine stock is reoiled and has minor handling and storage marks with strong checkering. Mechanically excellent.
