Documented San Antonio, Texas Shipped First Generation Colt Bisley Model Single Action Revolver in .45 Long Colt with Factory Letter

The factory letter lists this Bisley in .45 caliber with a 4 3/4 inch barrel, and blue finish when shipped to Charles Hummel & Sons in San Antonio, Texas, on August 14, 1901, in a shipment of three guns of this type. Includes a copy of a picture of Commerce Street showing the retailer store. Ben Thompson purchased the ammunition he used to kill Jack Harris at this famous early Texas gun store. While the Bisley, particularly the flat top target version, was originally designed to be a target revolver, these standard Bisley models also found their way to the West as sidearms, the Southwest in particular, where a pearl handled Bisley became the sidearm of Pancho Villa. This revolver is in solid condition but certainly appears to have seen plenty of period use. It has the standard blade and groove sights, "(BISLEY MODEL) 45 COLT" on the left side of the barrel, the two-line address on top of the barrel, the two-line patent marking and encircled Rampant Colt trademark on the left side of the frame, Rampant Colt embossed hard rubber grips, and matching serial numbers. The butt of the left grip has an "AP" or "AD" cattle brand style monogram.

ConditionVery good "frontier used" appearance overall with traces of original blue and casehardened finish in the protected areas and mainly a gray patina with some light speckling and minor oxidation/pitting. The grips are good and have an attractive light brown coloration, hand worn but distinct checkering, and mild overall wear. Mechanically excellent.
