The Volcanic Repeating Arms Company manufactured an estimated 1,500 of these pistols in 1855-1856. The pistol has a octagon barrel with integral eight-shot magazine. The pistol has a German silver cone front sight, "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854" on top of the full rib barrel, integral magazine tube with steel follower, notch rear sight dovetailed on the top of the "brass/gunmetal" frame, rounded front and rear ejection port cut-outs, single hook extractor, hand knurled hammer, finger loop lever, and smooth walnut grips. The matching serial number, "2161," is stamped on the side plates, bolt, toggle link, right side of the lever, right side of the frame at the butt, and inside each grip. There is also the "Y" stamp on the left side of the lever and right side of the butt.

Very good with attractive dark aged patina on the frame and side plates, mottled brown patina and mild oxidation/pitting on the steel components, and generally mild age and storage related wear overall. The refinished, undersized grips are good with mild dings and scratches, small nicks and chips at the lower edges, a spliced repair on the right panel, and glued repair on the left panel. Mechanically fine.
