Description:

The Winchester Model 1873 is famous as "The Gun that Won the West" and was one of the most popular firearms in late 19th century America. Chambered in .44-40 W.C.F. and fitted with traditional sporting sights as well as a peep sight and a deluxe pistol grip stock, this rifle would have made an excellent hunting rifle. It was manufactured in 1887 and has a German silver "Rocky Mountain" blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, standard markings, the third model guide rail and dust cover, Lyman tang peep sight, "2836 XX" on the lower tang and "2836" repeated in the upper tang mortise and inside of the buttplate at the toe, checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with nice figure, and crescent buttplate (compartment empty).

Rating Definition:

Good "out of the attic" and "frontier issued" appearance overall. The metal exhibits mainly dark brown and gray patina and retains traces of the original finishes. There is some mild oxidation and general moderate overall wear. The front sling swivel and lever latch are absent. The wood has distinct but partially smoothed checkering, moderate dings and scratches, and nice figure. Mechanically fine. This rifle looks like it was used out on a ranch in the West before being tucked away for many years and has a lot of character.
