Description:

Manufactured by an unknown firm c. mid-1800s, likely in Philadelphia, or at the very least in emulation of similar pistols being manufactured in the city at the time, such as those made by Henry Deringer. This example is very finely made, arguably more-so than some of Deringer's own examples, and is simply marked "PHILADA" on the upper barrel flat. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and notch rear sight, and the "snail" type hooked breech has a gold plug and gold inlaid bands. The barrel has an under rib with an ebony ramrod fitted below it. The lock is floral scroll engraved with a blank gold inlaid oval and the hammer engraved as a fish. The furniture is German silver and engraved with similar scroll, a starburst on the forend cap, and pineapple trigger guard finial. The finely figured stock has a checkered bag shaped grip with a trapdoor in the butt.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the barrel retains 40% of the original brown finish, strong traces of the vibrant original case colors in sheltered areas, mostly bright gold and German silver, and crisp engraving overall. The wood is also fine with some scattered light handling marks and a few minor blemishes in the otherwise crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
