Description:

This carbine was manufactured in 1870 and features elaborate floral and scroll engraving on the action, hammer, lever, barrel bands, and buttplate. The engraving is nearly identical to serial number 51257 shown on page 83 of "Winchester Engraving" in the chapter "Model 1866 and the Ulrichs." It is identified as "non-factory engraved". There are also three others in the same style noted as featured on page 315-320 of "Arms and Armor Annual" from 1973. The engraving is clearly 19th century and was most likely executed by a New York retailer. The front barrel band has the blade front sight, and a two leaf rear sight is on the barrel at the breech. The barrel is marked with the two-line address and King's improvement patent ahead of the rear sight, and the serial number is marked on the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mostly crisp engraving, mottled dark brown patina and extensive moderate pitting on the iron, repaired/rewelded lever, 40% period retailer applied nickel plating mostly concentrated on the side plates, traces on the other components, attractive aged patina on the brass, and general moderate overall wear. The refinished wood is good and has a chip at the heel, thin repaired horizontal cracks visible in the buttstock, and light scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
