Description:

Manufactured in 1904 with standard two-line address/patent marking, two-line nickel steel marking, and "30 W.C.F." on the special order, 22 inch, tapered octagon, lightweight barrel. An importer mark is visible on the bottom of the barrel ahead of the forend cap. The three-line model/trademark marking is on the upper tang and serial number on the bottom of the receiver. The left side of the lower tang is marked "19356 R", with "19356" repeated in the stock inlet. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight, Lyman two-leaf rear sight, and a Lyman tang mounted peep sight. Import marked on underside of barrel. It is mounted with a straight grain, I-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap and checkered shotgun buttplate. These semi-deluxe rifles with their I-patterned checkering were never formally advertised by Winchester, and are thus significantly more rare than their deluxe counterparts. Additionally, out of the first 353,999 Model 1894s produced that the Cody Firearms Museum has the Winchester records for, only 2,252 had 22 inch barrels (per included copy of page 16 to the excerpt from the ARMAX Cody Firearms Museum journal rarity study). The included factory letter (copy) lists the rifle in .30 caliber with a 22 inch octagon barrel, plain trigger, 3/4 magazine, takedown, extra light, with Lyman front, leaf, and rear sights, and a plain checkered pistol grip stock with a hard rubber shotgun buttplate when received at the warehouse on 18 August 1904 and shipped on 15 September 1904 in order number 234174. Provenance: The Wayne Connor Collection

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 75% plus of the bright original blue finish, 70% of the original nitre blue on the loading gate, and 50% of the vibrant original case colors with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina. The wood is fine with some light handling marks scattered throughout, a series of minor dings on the right wrist area, and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. An attractive special order Winchester Model 1894 with a very desirable 22 inch barrel!
