Description:

The Burgess Gun Company was established in 1892 by Andrew Burgess, a very prolific gun designer in the late 1890s. Burgess was credited as having numerous mechanical patents for various firearms used by several of the well known arms producers. These shotguns were manufactured only from 1892-1899 before the company and all the patents were purchased by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Total quantity is estimated at only a few thousand. Offered here is a factory engraved deluxe example with game scene panels and select grade walnut stock that will make a fine addition to the most advanced shotgun or firearms art collection. The engraving is in the style of Master Engraver Conrad Ulrich who was active from 1875 to 1913 and was known for his English type scrollwork and multiple border motifs, two engraving patterns featured on this shotgun. The left side of the receiver has a beautifully engraved marsh scene depicting three ducks. A second well-executed, finely detailed game scene is engraved on the right side of the receiver, which depicts two setters flushing out a woodcock. These two panel scenes are further decorated with fine scrollwork and borders. The scrollwork on the front sides of the receiver surround a small flying duck. The scrollwork extends to the trigger guard and bolt. The bolt is also hand engraved "BURGESS GUN CO./BUFFALO N.Y., U.S.A." The engraving certainly gives the impression that this shotgun was possibly a factory exhibition piece! The barrel features two inlaid platinum bands at the breech and a single bead sight on a matted solid rib. The forearm and stock are select walnut and the forearm features multi-point checkering. The select walnut pistol grip with iron sleeve, which acts as the action mechanism when slide rearward, is also checkered. The iron sleeve on the pistol grip is also finely engraved. The underside of the stock has a blank silver initial shield. Fitted with a factory checkered hard rubber shotgun type buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The barrel and magazine retain 85% bright original high polish blue finish, and the receiver retain 90% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The hardware on the pistol grip retains 95% original blue finish. The engraving is crisp. There is a small chip on the buttplate at the toe. The wood is very fine with minor dings and scratches and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Factory engraved deluxe Burgess shotguns stand as a rarity in sporting arms collecting and are well deserving of the finest collections. This is an exceptional example of a scarce, deluxe engraved, Burgess shotgun that will certainly make a grade statement in your collection!
