Description:

E. Remington & Sons purchased a U.S. Navy contract for 1,000 Jenks carbines with Maynard tape primers from Ames Manufacturing Co., circa 1847-1848. "REMINGTON'S/HERKIMER/N.Y." marked on the lock plate, "86" inside the tape primer cover, "W JENKS" parallel to the bore followed by "U.S.N/RP/P/1847/CAST-STEEL" ahead of the oval loading port, "3/48" in two lines on the underside of the breech lever, and small "P" marks on a few of the components. The oval loading opening found on many of these carbines was an alteration of the earlier round opening and was designed to facilitate the use of paper cartridge rather than loose balls and powder. The bore was also rifled at this time. Boxed script "RP" (Richard Paine) cartouche on the left of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retains 95% plus original brown finish with some scattered light scratches, and sharp markings in the metal. 95% vivid original case colors remain. The brass retains an attractive bright patina. The stock is also excellent with attractive original raised wood grain and rich oil finish, defined edges, a few scattered light dings and scratches, and an exceptionally crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. An excellent example of a Remington Navy Jenks carbine that would make a fine addition to any U.S. Martial collection!
