This attractive sporting gun is from Johann Andreas Kuchenreuter (1716-1795) of Regensburg, Bavaria, and is signed ".IOH. AND. KUCHENREUTER." in silver inlay on top of the barrel. The two-stage barrel has a silver blade front sight with flush "spider" base, scroll engraving on the breech section, and a sunken lion mark on top at the breech. The brass lock plate has an engraved scene of a rider and dogs chasing a boar. The gilt brass furniture has scroll, mask, and hunting scene patterns, including another boar scene on the buttplate and dogs subduing a stag on the intricately pierced side plate. The stock has a horn forend tip, mix of incised and raised relief scroll and floral carving, a large rounded cheekrest, and a small compartment on the bottom (added later). Provenance: The Collection of Joe M. Wanenmacher Jr

Rating Definition:

Fine as professionally reconverted to flintlock configuration with dark aged patina on the barrel signature, traces of original blue finish, mottled gray and brown patina on the balance of the barrel, aged patina on the brass, much of the gilt finish remaining, mostly crisp engraving and designs aside from the barrel tang, crisp stock carving, general mild dings and scratches, a few fain cracks, and relatively minor overall wear. Mechanically fine.
