Lazari Cominaz Marked Italian Snaphance Pistol

The snaphance, aka snaphaunce, was introduced around 1550 and was used alongside the matchlocks, wheellocks, and other early firearms ignition systems until most of them were replaced by the flintlock in the 17th century. The Italians, however, continued to manufacture snaphances into the mid-18th century. This smoothbore pistol is signed "LAZARI COMINAZ" on top of the barrel, and the breech section also has raised ribs. The left side has an "S" shaped side plate and a belt hook. The inside of the lock has what appears to be "Antrio Cheloni." There is some light floral engraving. The stock is nicely figured. Provenance: The Collection of Joe M. Wanenmacher Jr

ConditionFair overall with gray patina, moderate pitting, some poor fit, and heavy wear. The refinished stock is poor and has cracks and numerous filled repairs. Mechanically fair.
