This carbine was manufactured during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars when various volunteer units were formed across the United Kingdom. It is marked "MATHER/NEWCASTLE" on the lock and has Tower private proofs on the smoothbore barrel. It has a bayonet stud/front sight block, saddle ring and bar on the left, and brass furniture.
Fine with mottled gray and brown patina, minor pitting, aged patina on the furniture, and generally minor overall wear. The stock is also fine and has a coat of varnish, minor dings and scratches, and a few minor flakes. Mechanically excellent.
