Excellent and Very Scarce Whitney-Laidley Style I Saddle Ring Carbine

Manufactured circa 1871-1881. This carbine has no visible marker's markings. The action has the Whitney style hammer and breechblock pins with extensions secured by a screw unlike the Remingtons which had a washer. The barrel has three groove rifling, a triangular blade front sight, a two leaf rear sight graduated from 100 to 500 yards, and "45-" at the breech. The lower tang has the serial number, and the upper tang is blank. Oval script "ESA" (Erskine S. Allin) inspection cartouche stamped on the left stock wrist.

ConditionExcellent, retains 85% original blue finish with some scattered light surface corrosion concentrated towards the muzzle end, and sharp caliber marking at the breech. 97% vivid original case colors remain on the frame. Wood is very fine as re-oiled, with defined edges, some scattered light handling marks and dents, some filled in pin-sized holes on the right of the buttstock from a previous display plaque, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
