Description:

Measuring 16 inches overall, with an 11 inch long trefoil blade with a spear point and faint wire etching. The hilt is constructed from either antique ivory or bone, with the 4 inch wide crossguard topped out with fleur-de-lis quillions, cylindrical grip carved with a cherub holding a rose-accented laurel and a crown over three fleur-de-lis in an oval, a traditional symbol of France. The sheath is of similar construction with a tapered, conical profile, elaborately carved including busts of four French kings; Francois II (reign 1559-1560), Charles IX (reign 1560-1574), Henri III (reign 1574-1589) and Henri IV (reign 1589-1610). Provenance: The Dr. Gerald Klaz Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good overall. The blade has been polished, with traces of shallow pitting and fading of the etching. The furniture is very good, with some mended cracks in the guard and throat, fine aged color, mild handling marks overall, and strong detail in the carving.
