Description:

This exceptionally rare albumen print features the Wild West legend, Martha "Calamity" Jane Cannary (1852-1903) at the center, standing and wearing her iconic fringed buckskins. She wears a western style hat with the butt of a Stevens Hunter's Pet pocket rifle resting on the ground and the barrel in her hand. There is a holstered revolver on her hip that appears to be a Colt Single Action Army revolver, and what may be a Smith & Wesson spur trigger revolver tucked in her belt. The backing/matting of the print has a small handwritten note detailing that the picture is of Calamity Jane and was taken in 1876 or 1877 in Deadwood, South Dakota, and that it was formerly the property of Rufus J. Pilcher. Rufus' father Joseph Pilcher is noted as being an established businessman who frequented the same circles as Calamity, and operated a hotel in Deadwood around the time that she was there.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the image distinct with some scattered mild staining and smudging. The print has been cut previously to fit in a frame and is glued to the card stock backing/matting. A very desirable piece of Wild West history!
