This Winchester Mode 1873 was manufactured in 1882 as a second model with the dust cover guide secured to the receiver with two screws and a dust cover with serrated rear edge. Dovetail blade and elevation adjustable sights are on a barrel marked with the two-line address/patent dates information ahead of the rear sight and "44 WCF" at the breech. The model designation is on the upper tang, the serial number is on the lower tang, and "44 CAL" is on the brass cartridge elevator. The action is equipped with a special order single set trigger. The highly figured and checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock feature an ebony grip insert and trapdoor buttplate (cleaning rod not included). The left side of the lower tang is marked "XX 4204," and "4204" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate. The included factory letter states this rifle had a 1/2 octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock and casehardened finish when received in the warehouse on April 25, 1882, and shipped on May 12, 1882. The finish on the receiver is original, and the serial confirmation likely reflects an error within the factory records.
Extremely fine, retaining 85% plus bright original high polish blue finish with the bottom of the forend cap and most of the bottom of the magazine tube a dark brown patina. 80% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate, and 95% vivid original case colors remain on the hammer, lever and buttplate. The wood is very fine with slight chipping near the toe, a hairline crack in the grip area (left side), minor handling evidence and most of the original finish. The checkering is crisp overall. Mechanically excellent. Overall a very attractive special order deluxe Winchester Model 1873.
