Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Extra Lightweight Takedown Lever Action .45-70 Short Rifle with Scarce Plain Pistol Grip Stock

Based on a John Browning patent, the Model 1886 was one of the strongest lever actions ever used in a Winchester rifle, with this example chambered in highly desirable 45-70 caliber and in scarce special order lightweight takedown rifle configuration. As Winchester expert and author George Madis noted, "While [Model 1886 lightweight 45-70 rifles] were offered over a period of years, comparatively few were produced and it is a scarce gun" ("The Winchester Book," page 249). It was manufactured in 1905. The short barrel is stamped with the two-line New Haven address ahead of the rear sight, "45-70" at the breech, and "NICKEL STEEL" on the left side under the rear sight. The rifle is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The upper tang has the three-line model/trade mark information. The lower tang has the patent dates marking and the serial number. The rifle features a special order plain walnut pistol grip stock which is fitted with a hard rubber Winchester grip cap and shotgun buttplate. The straight grain walnut pistol grip stock is an unusual and scarce special order feature as this type of stock is generally encountered in select grade walnut.

ConditionExceptionally fine, retaining 80% original blue finish on the receiver with the underside of the receiver taking on a smooth gray patina. The barrel retains 50% of the thin faded blue with chemical spots visible overall. The loading gate retains 40% original nitre blue. 40% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The wood is fine with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
