Description:

Starting in the 16th century, canes and walking sticks became extremely popular, first among royalty and nobility, and by the 19th and 20th centuries having worked their way down to the middle classes as a symbol of status. Canes were particularly popular among gentlemen throughout the British Empire, with this example presenting strong association to India given its theme. The slightly "L" shaped, antique ivory handle is masterfully relief carved in the shape of a snarling tigers head, with enamel painted stripes and eyes of yellow glass. The handle is joined to the shaft with an extra large, ornately detailed, "STERLING" marked silver band engraved with a "CJMD" monogram. The varnished hardwood shaft is smooth and tipped with dark horn.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, the antique ivory showing an attractive slightly aged appearance and some mild fading of the enamel stripes, silver showing an attractive antique patina, some scattered light handling marks on the shaft, and some light wear on the horn tip. A beautifully carved cane that would pair brilliantly with a large bore British sporting gun!
