German Flintlock Jaeger Rifle with Scrimshaw Decorated Stock and Leonhard Wenger Signed and 1629 Dated Barrel

This rifle stylistically matches a number of examples from the Salm Armory and dates to the late 17th century with the gunsmith making use of an earlier barrel. The barrel has nine-groove rifling, a blade front sight that can be removed by sliding it forward, large "dished" rear sight with decorative finials, "LEONHAR[maker's mark] D WENGER" on top at the breech, "1-6" on the upper left, "2-9" on the upper right, border engraving at the breech, and a short tang. The lock has floral engraving, double line borders, and no markings. The ramrod entry pipe, trigger guard, scrolling side plate, pierced escutcheon, and buttplate are iron. The remaining furniture is staghorn or bone and is engraved with scroll, floral, and bestial engraving patterns. The left side of the stock has the Salm family mark consisting of a pair of salmon. The Princes zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck had a large arms collection in their armoury, and this rifle was part of the sale of their arms in 1992. The patchbox contains the family brass collection tag numbered "259".

ConditionFine overall with mostly polished silver-gray patina on the lock, barrel, and iron furniture; mild pitting in some of the recessed areas, crisp markings and engraving, mostly distinct designs on the inlays and other furniture, some newer components, chipping at the muzzle, some thin cracks and repairs in the stock, and general mild overall wear. Mechanically fine.
