Description:

Johann Bernhard Hoffer was active in Nuremberg, Bavaria, c. 1762-1800. The smoothbore barrel has a silver blade front sight and "1," "I: HOFFER-IN-NURNBERG:-," and floral patterns in silver inlay on the breech section along with a sunken silver stag maker's mark. The rifled barrel has a brass blade front sight and notch rear sight. The back action lock is not marked. The gun is equipped with adjustable single set triggers. The forend panels and stock have brass furniture and incised and raised relief scroll carving, including on the patch box lid.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with mostly dark brown patina on the barrels and lock, some mild pitting mainly above the vents, loose cock and barrel assembly fit, attractive aged patina on the brass furniture, and mild overall wear. The wood is also good and has some partially smoothed carving, a repair in the wrist, some cracks and chips, and general minor scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
