Description:

This is a fine original example of a Mauser Banner contract Luger with the very desirable intertwined "GNR" logo on top of the chamber area. These pistols were virtually unheard of in this country until approximately 20+ years ago when a small quantity was purchased overseas and eventually imported. There were exactly 564 pistols produced in total in this contract run with the serial numbers being in the 1921v-2484v range. As noted, surviving examples are scarce in any condition, and, based on the condition of this example, this is one of the best we have seen. These models were made expressly for the Portuguese military and have the 1906 style frame with no stock lug, fast taper barrel and the grip safety. The top of the chamber area, as noted, is marked with the large intertwined "GNR" logo of the "GARDE NATIONALE REPUBLICANE" (Republican National Guard) with the desirable "Mauser" banner logo on top of the toggle. The underside of the barrel and right side of the barrel extension has the small Crown over "U" commercial proof. They are numbered in the commercial manner with the full serial number located on the front of the frame, the underside of the barrel and the right side of the barrel extension. The breech block, trigger, take down lever, and side plate all have the last two digits of the serial number. They have the inverted "v" fixed front sight and fixed rear sight. They have the rust blued finish with straw colored small parts and checkered walnut grips, and this pistol is complete with a late nickel plated magazine with an unmarked aluminum base.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with 90% of the original blue finish with some light thinning and blue loss on the front and rear grip strap, the edged and high spots such as the left side of the front sight base, the front edges of the frame rails and the side plate hump. The small parts retain 60% of the fragile straw colors. The grips are very fine with a nice dark brown matching color on each side and light wear across the tops of the checkering in the center of the grip panels and a few small minor nicks and very small flat spots all from general use. This is just an exceptional high condition, rare 1906/34 Portuguese contract Luger, certainly for the advanced Luger collector.
