Description:

This is a very desirable U.S. Springfield Model 1903 rifle, still in its original configuration as manufactured in 1909. The receiver is roll marked with the five-line, standard Springfield Armory markings, and the top of the barrel is stamped "SA" above the Ordnance shell and flame insignia and the date "5-09". The rifle has an oil quenched casehardened receiver and all blued milled components that include the barrel bands, bolt, trigger guard, and floorplate. The safety and cut-off lever are casehardened. It is fitted with a walnut "S" style stock that has a single reinforcing bolt as introduced in the year 1909, flat top handguard, smooth steel buttplate with compartment, smooth trigger, dished windage and elevation knob, and rear sight leaf with the 2,850 yard notch. "H" marked on the bayonet lug, two "S" stamps on the right of the rear bolt lug, "T" marked underneath the bolt handle, the left stock wrist is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection initials "J.F.C." in a rectangle, a small "E" in the cutoff recess, and a small "27" above a circled script "P" firing proof stamped behind the trigger guard. Includes a "1909" dated Springfield M1905 bayonet, "1909" dated Rock Island Arsenal leather scabbard, "1910" dated Rock Island Arsenal M1907 leather sling, and oiler inside the butt compartment.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 70% original blue and oil-quenched finish with smooth brown patina and some scattered light to moderate freckling on the balance, a few small patches of light pitting, and otherwise sharp edges and markings in the metal overall. Stock is excellent with crisp grasping grooves and defined edges, some light handling marks, a few small chips at the toe, and a crisp cartouche and proofmark. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet and scabbard are both fine.
