Manufactured in circa 1880, with blued steel barrels respectively signed “MANTON & CO. GUNMAKERS TO H.R.H. THE” and “DUKE OF EDINBURGH KG. LONDON & CALCUTTA”, and with broad file cut matted rib with doll’s head extension, rear sight of one standing and three folding leaves calibrated to “300” yards and each with platinum inlaid center line, and large ramp mounted bead front sight with protective shoulders. Action with carved percussion fences and back action non-rebounding locks each signed “MANTON & CO.” The breech ends of the barrels, the action, locks and furniture engraved with small scroll and double line borders. The barrels and action are struck with London black powder proof marks. Figured walnut pistol grip stock with rubber recoil pad, checkered grip and forearm, the last with lever latch. The underside of the butt with blank silver oval initial escutcheon and sling eye, the corresponding sling eye mounted beneath the barrels. Weight: 16 lbs 10.8 oz. Barrels retaining near 95% reblacked finish turning to plum in places, signature clear. Rifling frosted. Front sight replaced. Action and locks cleaned bright, some scattered pitting, signatures clear. Stock refinished, some handling marks throughout, checkering well-defined, forearm wood professionally replaced. Mechanically very good.
