Description:

Measuring 39 inches overall, with a 34 inch straight single edged blade with etched decoration and niter blue panels on each side. The left side has a scene of two cavalry forces armed with swords and lances about to collide on the field of battle flanked by oak leaf motifs, and the right has "Konigs Ulan. Regt. (1. Hannov) No 13" surrounded by rose motifs. While they would later be incorporated into the unified Imperial German Army as the 13th Regiment under the X Army Corps, the unit started as the 1st Hanover as part of the King's German Legion, a British unit formed under the authority of George III (both King of England and Elector of Hanover) and made up of Hanoverian soldier and officers who fled Hanover when it was occupied by Napoleon. During Britain's fight against Napoleon, the Legion was engaged throughout Continental Europe, seeing action in the Peninsular War and the Battle of Waterloo, before eventually returning to a re-established Kingdom of Hanover. Fitted with a nickel finished hilt with Imperial Eagle motifs, a black celluloid grip, and a black enamel finished scabbard. Provenance: The Paul Crockett Jr. Collection

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The excellent blade shows some light flaking and spotting, with good detail in the etching and strong niter blue, the hilt shows some bending in the guard and minor scratches on the grip, and the scabbard shows some scratches and flaking.
