Fine Engraved Mortimer, London 14 Bore / 15 Bore Double Barrel Percussion Combination Gun with Case

This rare percussion combination gun was built in circa 1840, the right barrel 14 bore smoothbore, the left barrel 15 bore rifled. With browned Damascus bolstered barrels with raised flat rib fitted with blued rear sight of three folding leaves and signed “MORTIMER, FLEET ST. LONDON” towards the breech end. The underside of the barrels struck with London proof marks. Casehardened patent breeches each with platinum plug. Border and scroll engraved standing breech and side locks, the latter each signed “MORTIMER”, the left lock with detent. Blued furniture including trigger guard with checkered pistol grip. Well figured straight hand walnut half stock with checkered grip, the underside of the butt with blank silver oval initial escutcheon. Original brass mounted ramrod. In original brass cornered fitted mahogany case lined in dark blue velvet, with some accessories including a brown leather shot flask. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection

ConditionVery fine with 60% of the browned finish remaining with some areas of discoloration and spotting and clear barrel markings. The breech, hammer, locks and other casehardened components retain approximately 30% of their original finish. The trigger guard and butt plate retain 60% of their original blue finish with some areas of discoloration, mostly on the butt plate. The refinished wood is very good with numerous scratches and dings, well defined checkering, and some slight chipping of the edges. The case is very fine with several scratches on the exterior, including one running nearly the entire length of the top, a large crack coming off one of the corners, and some slight tears and staining to the interior. Mechanically excellent.
