Dating to circa 1866 (see Donald Dallas, "Holland & Holland ‘The Royal’ Gunmaker," p. 233), this early gun was manufactured by Harris John Holland prior to his nephew joining him and the company renaming to the world famous Holland & Holland. The unusual nickel plated finish on the metal parts of the gun is to help with corrosion resistance on the foreshore or marsh for wildfowl shooting. Featuring a tapering round Damascus barrel with bead sight and signed “H. HOLLAND/98, NEW BOND ST LONDON.” on the octagonal breech section. London black powder proof and 2004 reproof marks. Border engraved action with carved percussion fence and non-rebounding back action lock signed “H. HOLLAND”. Figured 13 3/4 inch straight hand stock with spacer and orange rubber heel plate, the grip and forearm checkered. The underside of the butt with blank silver oval initial escutcheon. Weight 12 lbs. 0.6 oz. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection
Fine. Retaining 98% nickel plated finish with clear engraved signatures and border engraving, Damascus pattern visible beneath the plated finish. Some corrosion marking to the barrel following the edge of the forearm wood.
