Blued steel barrels with a single steel bead on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked "HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET. LONDON" and "WINNERS OF ALL THE 'FIELD'/RIFLE TRIALS. LONDON. 1883". The barrels are marked sleeved on either flat and show Birmingham nitro reproofs for 2 3/4 inch chambers with single extractor. The casehardened Climax Safety Hammerless sidelock action displays extensive floral scroll engraving surrounding "HOLLAND & HOLLAND" on either side and extending to the toplever, both tangs, and the triggerguard. The gun features gas checked firing pins, double triggers, and automatic tang mounted safety with gold inlaid "SAFE". The locks each have a cyrstal cocking indicator, gold washed hammers, and each is serial numbered internally and engraved "PATENT SAFETY". Attractively figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings, including the Deeley latch release, and straight grip stock with blank gold inscription oval and horn buttplate. Included with the gun is documentation from Holland & Holland listing the original configuration of the gun as well as it being shot and regulated on May 5th, 1884, and completed for Sewallis Shirley, 10th Earl Ferrers; a picture of him is also included. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proved at 16.9mm (.665 inches) and both measured at .669 inches; choke constriction .011/.029 inches; minimum wall thickness .034/.037 inches; 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 2 3/16 inch drop at heel; 14 1/16 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 2 oz.
Very fine as refurbished, retaining 99% blue on the sleeved barrels, an attractive polished bright coloration to the action and locks, some polished pitting, and light handling evidence. The left side of the forend is chipped; otherwise, the wood with a few light storage and handling marks and sharp checkering. The left lockplate is slightly proud, otherwise mechanically excellent.
