Description:

This is an excellent Winchester Model 1885 High Wall special order plain sporting rifle with the desirable double set triggers. This rifle was manufactured some time after 1915, however the specific date cannot be determined as the Winchester records don't identify it. This rifle is fitted with a 30 inch full round, #3 heavy weight target barrel, that is chambered in the very desirable 25-35 WCF cartridge. This round was introduced in 1895 and was one of the first to have the new smokeless powder. The barrel has the standard two-line factory markings of "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." followed by "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" both offset to the side of the barrel, with the "25-35 WCF" caliber markings in front of the receiver ring. The Winchester circled "WP" firing proofs are directly on top of the receiver and barrel. The barrel has the standard steel blade front sight with the Winchester buckhorn sporting rear sight with the fine-tune, adjustable elevation insert. It has been fitted with the special order double set triggers, the Winchester pattern double set trigger loading lever, and a straight grip walnut stock and matching straight grain walnut forend with the small Winchester ebony insert in the tip. The buttstock is fitted with a crescent buttplate. It has a blued metal finish, color casehardened loading lever, and low luster factory varnish.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish overall, edge and high spot wear, spotting and thinning on the top rear end of the barrel (typically where it is held) and around the rear sight, and blue loss on the lower edges of the receiver. The loading lever retains 80% subdued case colors showing light fading overall. The buttstock and forend are both very fine with 90% plus of the factory varnish overall showing minor, light handling marks and scratches on the sides of both the buttstock and forend. The wood to metal fit is excellent. Mechanically excellent. A very nice looking, all original, Winchester Model 1885 high wall sporting rifle in a very desirable 25-35 WCF caliber.
