Outstanding Civil War U.S. Contract Starr Arms Co. Model 1858 Army Double Action Revolver Rig with Holster, Belt, Bullet Mold, and Cartridge Pack

The Model 1858 Army double action revolvers were manufactured by the Starr Arms Co. of New York. Between 1862 and 1864 the Ordnance Department purchased approximately 21,000 .44 caliber Starr D.A. revolvers. These revolvers were issued to a broad array of Union cavalry regiments from Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Vermont, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. The first 9,900 of these revolvers were procured in 1862. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, six-shot cylinder, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading lever, trigger, and hammer have a color casehardened finish. The screws have a fire blue finish. The one-piece grip is oil finished walnut and has crisp "JWK" (John W. Keene) cartouches on both the left and right. It also has the standard Starr markings and small government inspection markings on the various components. Included with the revolver is a very rare U.S. holster and cavalry belt rig with an S.H. Young & Co. cap box and J. Davy & Co. cartridge box. Provenance: The Guy Gerhard Collection; The Greg Lampe Collection

Rating definitionExcellent. 95% of the bright original high polish blue finish and 97% of the vibrant original case colors remain. There are small areas of flaking on the barrel, cylinder, and frame, and the cylinder has drag lines and minor edge wear but retains bright original blue finish on the front face and even in the chambers. The muzzle also has strong original blue finish which is rare. The grip is also excellent and has an extremely crisp pair of cartouches. The trigger reset is weak, but the revolver is otherwise mechanically excellent. The accessories are all very fine and have minimal light age and storage related wear. Like the revolver, they do not appear to have been issued. Overall, this is a remarkable set and a truly outstanding Starr Model 1858 Army revolver, one of the few double actions available during the Civil War and certainly the most widely used.
