Description:

The smoothbore, octagon to round barrel has rifle style sights, star and cross designs incised on the breech section and a lighter "PA" inscription on top above the vent suggesting the rifle is by Peter Angstadt of Berks County, Pennsylvania. Another very similar "PA" rifle attributed to Peter Angstadt is also known and per its family history was carried west from Pennsylvania to Aledo, Illinois, not far from our facility. Like that rifle, this rifle has a replacement lock (appears to be a Jim Chambers Golden Age). The furniture is brass and is not engraved aside from the simple "IIXI" and "IXII" markings on the side plate (the other rifle referenced has "IIX" and "XII" at the same location). The forend has a swag and tassel pattern incised along the sides of the ramrod channel that are then repeated along the sides of the two-piece patchbox. A panel of checkering is located behind the entry pipe. There are also checkered panels and sunrise patterns around the barrel tang. The wrist has checkering patterns. The left side of the butt has an ovoid shaped inlay with a screw in the center, double lines incised at the edge of the cheekpiece, and a double "C" scroll design with radiating lines behind the cheekpiece.

Rating Definition:

Fine as reconverted to flintlock configuration as noted above which has an attractive "antiqued" brown finish with controlled pitting. The barrel has a mix of pleasing dark brown patina and artificial brown finish, mild pitting, and general mild wear. There are some gaps around the tang, and the tang screw is a replacement. The brass has attractive aged patina. The stock is also fine and has distinct checkering and carving, some stabilized cracks and repaired chips mainly in the forend, and attractive smooth finish. Mechanically excellent.
