Blued steel barrel with a hooded beaded blade front sight, four leaf (three folding, one standing) rear sight, and additional ladder rear sight just ahead of the four leaf, "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co. LONDON" marked on top of the barrel, "EXPRESSLY BUILT FOR A. HARTMAN & Co. CALCUTTA." on the right side of the barrel, and "WESTLEY RICHARDS/HIGH VELOCITY NITRO/EXPRESS RIFLE .400 BORE" marked near the muzzle. The rifle shows correct period Birmingham proofs and lists a max charge of 60 grains cordite under a 400 grain bullet. The blued falling block action shows an Asiatic lion scene on either side with the left over "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co./LONDON" and features a safety switch on the right of the triggerguard. Nicely figured, multi-point checkered forend and pistol grip stock with horn grip cap and blued steel trapdoor buttplate. Length of pull 14 9/16 inches. Weight 7 lbs. 7 oz.
Fine, retaining 98% period refinished blue finish showing a plum hue on the barrel, some pitting under the finish, dried grease giving a greenish hue, and overall mild handling evidence. There is a professionally repaired section on either side of the upper tang, otherwise the wood is also fine with some edge chipping and sharp recut checkering. Mechanically excellent.
