Attractive DWM/John Martz Custom 1916 Dated Military Luger in Semi-Automatic "Scout Carbine" Configuration with Scope and Stock

Manufactured in 1916 later converted by John Martz into a sporting carbine. While not entitled to the same exemptions to the NFA the ATF gives original carbines, the use of a 16 1/4 inch barrel creates a weapon that can be used as a handgun without the stock or as a rifle with the stock without creating a Short Barreled Rifle (per U.S. vs Thompson/Center). No iron sights, but an integrally forged elevated block on the barrel serves as the mounting point for a section of Weaver rail and a Leupold long eye relief scope with spring loaded covers. An iron mounted to the front of the triggerguard serves as the mounting point for a checkered Schnabel tip forearm; in contrast to the original Artillery Luger, this iron is shaped and mounted with care to preserve the original serial number, only obscuring the suffix. Martz's markings "JM", "32" and "M.S.T.R." are present under the sideplate, the latter designating the Martz Safe Toggle Release, which is installed in the modified interior of the frame. Some components are unnumbered, but all visible numbers match. The stock follows the profile of the commercial carbine, with the bright polished mounting iron having a mixed original number on top and matching added number on the bottom, fine wrist checkering, and a serrated horn buttplate.

ConditionVery fine as totally customized, with 95% plus high polish blue finish and 90% plus bright straw color, showing some minor wear and handling marks overall. The extractor is a bit undersized, and some of the surrounding metal has been removed, possibly to form a safety vent in case of a primer rupture. A chip is forming in the left grip panel, a few chips are absent from the stock near the mounting iron, otherwise the wood is very good with light dings, scratches, and crisp checkering. The optics are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent.
