Description:

This rare all original, SRS documented M1922 M2 NRA Sales rifle was sold in 1939. This model is discussed pages 295-303 of the book “The 03 Springfield” by Brophy. These are probably the rarest of the Springfield Armory 22 caliber rifles given only 75 are estimated to have been produced in total. The barrel and receiver were “drilled and tapped" for the Winchester A5 scope, and Springfield Armory charged extra for this work, so they were only manufactured on a special order basis. The SRS letter indicates this rifle was sold in February 1939 to James Ahl of Alamogordo, NM, as a “Parkerized NRA” sales rifle with the test target. The original Springfield Armory plug screws are still intact and were never removed and have a matching pre-war parkerized finish that matches the receiver and barrel. Page 302 of the above referenced book shows the same exact type scope block holes and plug screws. The receiver is marked “U.S. /Springfield/Armory/CAL/22/M2/5627.” The barrel is marked “SA/Ordnance Shell & Flame/4-37". The rifle retains its original Lyman 48C Target rear sight and 1903 style front sight and has a scarce second pattern bolt stamped "NS/M2" on top and marked with the matching serial number etched on the underside. This bolt headspace screw has the lead seal still intact and marked with the Springfield Armory “C” stamp. It also has the late Springfield Armory speed lock firing pin assembly. The receiver and barrel are correctly parkerized, and the Springfield Armory blue/black finish is on the trigger guard, floor plate barrel bands, sling swivels and buttplate. It has an original NRA Sales pattern, oil finished, walnut buttstock with the smooth sides and heavily checkered, cupped NRA Sales buttplate. Includes an original parkerized M2 marked magazine and front sight cover.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, as issued, appearing unfired with 98% plus of the original armory blue/black and parkerized finishes overall with just a hint of wear on the very front edge of the floor plate. The bolt and bolt raceway are still in the white from Springfield Armory. The stock is in like new condition with original finish and only a couple extremely minute handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This is not only a very scarce rifle, it's also in outstanding condition.
