The Story of Steve McQueen's Mare's Leg

By: Rock Island Auction CompanyPublished in RIAC Latest · 1 min read · July 11, 2025

Steve McQueen is the King of Cool and he got his start with a couple of guest spots on the TV show "Trackdown." On that old Western, he was armed with a unique Winchester 1892 he called his "Mare's Leg." The weapon helped call attention to his character, bounty hunter Josh Randall, and eventually led to his own series, "Wanted: Dead or Alive."

It was his breakthrough to stardom. It was the first ever mare's leg, a design that still rears its head in today's pistol-grip shotguns. Much like the man who used it, the mare's leg spawned legions of imitators, but nothing compares to the original, screen-used mare's leg of Steve McQueen.
