LeMat Grapeshot Percussion Revolver
Though patented and used in 1856, the distinctive LeMat revolvers were most famously used during the Civil War by notable Confederates, including J.E.B. Stuart. Around 1,500 others were also ordered for use by the CSA Army and Navy. Jean Alexandre LeMat of New Orleans designed these revolvers with cavalry in mind, and the combination of a high capacity cylinder and central smoothbore barrel for shot was well-suited for running battles.

Lot 323
Engraved Colt Model 1860 Army Percussion Revolver
This revolver was manufactured in 1862 and subsequently was embellished in the 20th century. There is floral scroll engraving on the side of the barrel, nearly all of the frame, and part of the grip frame. There is an eagle head worked into the scroll work just above the wedge on the left and an animal head, scales, and scroll work on the hammer. The matching serial number along with a spurious "E" is marked on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, and butt. The "E" was used by Colt to indicate factory engraved firearms from 1861 until the early 1870s. The wedge and cylinder also have the full serial number, and the cylinder pin has "869". It has the one line "U.S. AMERICA" barrel address, "COLT'S/PATENT" on the left side of the frame, "44 CAL" on the left rear of the trigger guard, and the patent marking on the cylinder. An outline of a cartouche appears to be visible on the left side of the grip. The presence of the eagle head near the wedge is consistent with revolvers engraved in the shop of Gustave Young. For comparison see the Col. R. M. Martin Model 1860 Army on page 82 of the "Book of Colt Engraving" which also has a very similar motif on the hammer and an animal head near the wedge. The manner in which the scroll engraving wraps around the barrel address also matches known Gustave Young engraved Colt revolvers.

Two Colt Model 1849 "Wells Fargo" Pocket Percussion Revolvers

This example was manufactured in 1854 and has the standard cone and hammer notch sights, "{ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW YORK CITY}" on the barrel, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left of the frame, the stage coach holdup scene on the cylinder, and matching serial numbers on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, wedge, and arbor pin.

Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver with Stock
Manufactured in 1862 and has a four-screw frame, cut-outs for the shoulder stock yokes in the recoil shield. The reproduction military contract Third Style attachable shoulder stock has a brass yoke and buttplate with casehardened, butt hook and knurled nut. A faint rectangular Ordnance inspection stamp with three script initials is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. "U.S." enclosed in a rectangle is stamped on the stock comb ahead of the buttplate. The serial number of the revolver that the stock was initially issued with "34126"is stamped across the bottom of the lower tang. The iron sling ring is missing from the stock.

The Baby Dragoon was the first pocket revolver manufactured at Colt's factory in Hartford, and approximately 15,000 were manufactured in 1847-50. This revolver was manufactured in 1849 and has the two-line New York address on top of the barrel, small "COLTS/PATENT" on the left of the frame, and "COLTS/PATENT/9573" on the cylinder (the 5 is likely a factory error).
