Lot 469
Inland Division Presentation M1 Semi-Automatic Carbine
This is a very rare example of a late World War II Inland Division Presentation Grade M1 Carbine as manufactured by the General Motors Corp., serial number "XC32". During the initial stages of WWII at the start of production, the General Motors Inland Div. designated a specific block of M1 Carbine serial numbers that were intended to be used as experimental carbine receivers. At the end of the war, they decided to just utilize these "X" prefix serial number blocks for presentation type gifts for senior members of the military and executives within the General Motors Corporation. It is estimated that approximately 100 of the "XC" serial numbers were set aside, and only a handful of them were actually ever seen for sale with any example being highly sought by advanced collectors today. These carbines were all hand built from left over/select parts and wood to make sure they not only looked good but functioned equally as well. Unfortunately, we do not have any historical information on this specific carbine. The front receiver ring is marked "U.S. CARBINE/CAL. 30 M1", and under the rear sight, the early style, large serial number, "INLAND DIV/XC32". The barrel marked "INLAND MFG. DIV/GENERAL MOTORS/8-44" and has a single small "P" proof in front of the barrel band. It has a unmarked, second model barrel band without the bayonet lug, a late "IO" marked, round blued, bolt, a stamped, adjustable rear sight, late production "PI" marked operating slide, a late production M1 trigger housing with the sideways "INLAND" marking, and the correct "I-I" marked hammer. It also has an early unmarked push button safety and "M" marked magazine catch. It is fitted with the original Inland Division M1 carbine stock marked with an "HI" proof in the sling slot and a two rivet "IO" marked walnut handguard. This example correctly does not have any U.S. Government acceptance proofs as these were never accepted by the U.S. Army as they are non-standard Presentation M1 Carbines. Includes one 15 round blued "IA" marked magazine.

Lot 473
Rock-Ola Presentation M1 Carbine
With the lowest production numbers of all the M1 Carbine suppliers of World War II, Rock-Ola Carbines are already scarce, with a top quality presentation gun such as this being especially rare, worthy of a place of honor in an advanced collection. Produced circa 1943-1944, as part of Rock-Ola's second to last serial number block, this carbine was intended for Mr. H. Veneklasen, a member of the staff of Henry L. Stimpson, Secretary of War. Standard markings on the front receiver ring, the rear of the receiver is marked "ROCK-OLA/EX-6095440", and "ROCK-OLA" on the recoil plate and barrel. Correctly marked parts, with the early features produced during this time period, such as the Type II barrel band, flip rear sight, unmarked push button safety, the smooth "A-R marked M1 type magazine catch and two rivet handguard. The various parts are marked as follows; rear sight, R-R, bolt, ROCK-OLA, extractor; R, operating slide, ROCK-OLA, trigger guard ROCK-OLA, hammer LTQ-R, and recoil shield. Fitted with a low wood stock produced from attractively figured walnut and made without the oiler and sling cutouts, showing a fine tiger stripe pattern down the length. The carbine is housed in a handmade walnut display case that has a small brass presentation plaque on the inside of the lid that says; "M1 CAL 30-CARBINE/MANUFACTURED BY/ ROCK- OLA/ Manufacturing Corporation/ CHICAGO/ PRESENTED TO/ H. VENEEKLASEN/ 1945". The display case houses the carbine, with the following original new in the wrapper Rock-Ola accessories; a WWII canvas sling, the metal stock oiler and two 15 round magazines.

Underwood M1 Semi-Automatic Carbine with Infared Scope
This is an example of a late WWII Underwood production M1 carbine that has been converted into the infrared sniper model by equipping it with early post WWII M3 Infrared sniper scope system. The M3 infrared sniper scope was the second generation infrared scope that was developed after WWII that saw the majority of its use in Korea. These later scopes are identified by the large infrared emitter on top of the scope itself as well as having the rear sight removed with the M3 conversion/mounting bar installed on top of the carbine. The scope nomenclature plate is marked "CORPS OF ENGINEERS U.S. ARMY/TELESCOPE/SNIPERSCOPE INFRARED/20,000 VOLTS/AMERICAN OPTICAL Co./ Buffalo N.Y." It is marked "DATED 8-31-50" and is numbered "M3. 3398.50". The carbine has the standard receiver markings with serial number, "2806925", and the barrel is marked "UNDERWOOD/4-44". It is fitted with a mix of early and late WWII parts such as the flat bolt, type III front barrel band/bayonet lug, flip safety, M marked magazine release. It has the standard M1 carbine stock with the oval oiler slot and is stamped with a large "JLB" in the sling slot. The left side is stamped "AAW" with a large single uncircled "P" proof in the grip area, and it has a modified two rivet handguard. This scope system is complete with its front pistol grip/trigger assembly, heavy electrical cable, power pack, battery, black rubberized back-pack, a green web sling, and original M3 flash hider.

Inland Division Semi-Automatic "Shop Model" Test M1 Carbine
This is an example of an unusual early World War II Inland Division M1 Carbine that was manufactured by the General Motors Corp. The consignor has provided various pages from a reference book that note this specific example serial number "EA 26" as being manufactured as a "Shop Model" test carbine. The documents indicated that only a very small block of Inland M1 carbines manufactured in the "E" prefix serial number range were produced, with special funding guidelines from and monitored by Congress for testing purposes. These "E" series Shop Model carbines allowed the manufacturers to develop, design and produce modifications to the carbines and then submit them directly to Springfield Armory if they proved out. During the early stages of WWII, the General Motors Company used a variety of unusually numbered carbines as either experimental or prototype carbines, mostly within the "X" prefix. We did not find this specific serial number prefix; however, that doesn't mean its not legitimate. The receiver ring has the standard "U.S. CARBINE/CAL. 30 M1", and the rear of the receiver appears to be hand stamped "INLAND DIV/EA 26", behind the rear sight. The barrel marked "INLAND MFG. DIV/GENERAL MOTORS/4-43". The left side of the receiver is stamped with the larger "SG" indicating the receiver was manufactured by the Saginaw Steering Gear factory. It has the correct early features such as a flat blue bolt, flip rear sight, smooth face push button safety and magazine release, type 2, upright "INLAND" marked trigger housing with a "H" marked hammer. It is fitted with an early "I" cut high wood stock and early deep sight radius, two rivet handguard, both correctly "IO" marked. It is complete with a tan canvas sling, oiler and a blued five round magazine.

Inland Division Presentation M1 Semi-Automatic Carbine
This is an excellent, very scarce World War II era General Motors/Inland Division Presentation Grade M1 Carbine manufactured with serial number "XB9". During WWII the General Motors Inland Div. designated a specific serial number block of M1 carbines/receivers with letter prefix "XB" serial numbers that were intended for use a either experimental or prototype carbines. At the end of WWII they decided to utilize these "X" prefix serial number blocks for Presentation Grade M1 Carbines as gifts for senior military officers, as well as executives within the General Motors Corp. It is estimated that approximately 100 of the "XB" serial numbers were manufactured with only a handful of them actually being offered for sale and any examples being highly sought by advanced collectors today. Many of these carbines were produced from leftover/select parts and wood to make sure they not only looked good but functioned equally as well. The receiver ring is marked "U.S. CARBINE/CAL. 30 M1", and the rear is marked "INLAND DIV/XB9" under the rear sight. This M1 Carbine has the early style, large serial number. The barrel is marked "INLAND MFG. DIV/GENERAL MOTORS/11-43". It has a type two barrel band with a replacement sling swivel. It has a late "IS" marked, flat blued bolt, a later milled, adjustable rear sight, a "PI" marked operating slide, a type three M1 trigger housing with the sideways "INLAND" marking, and "HI" marked hammer. It also has a push button safety and unmarked magazine catch. It is fitted with unmarked early Inland Division high wood, "I" cut buttstock and early unmarked two rivet handguard with the deep sight radius cut. The front swivel is a commercial replacement; easy to replace. These company Presentation Carbines do not have any U.S. Government acceptance proofs, since they were never accepted by the U.S. Army. It is complete with a 15 round blued magazine.

Inland Division Presentation M1 Semi-Automatic Carbine
This is a very nice example of a rare World War II Inland Division Presentation Grade M1 Carbine that was manufactured by the General Motors Corp., serial number "XC39". During the initial stages of WWII, General Motors designated a specific serial number block of M1 carbine receivers for use as either experimental or prototype carbines. At the end of the war, they utilized these "X" prefix serial numbered receivers for Presentation Grade M1 Carbines, intended as gifts for senior military members as well as General Motors executives. It is estimated that approximately 100 of the "XC" serial numbered receivers manufactured with any original example considered as very rare and highly desirable by advanced M1 Carbine collectors. They were usually hand built using left over/select production parts and wood to make sure they not only looked good but functioned equally as well. We do not have any history as to who this was presented to. The front receiver ring is marked "U.S. CARBINE/CAL. 30 M1", and the rear of the receiver is marked with the early larger style "INLAND DIV/XC39" under the rear sight. The barrel marked "INLAND MFG. DIV/GENERAL MOTORS/9-44" with a single small "P" proof stamped in the middle of the exposed barrel. It has a very late type three barrel band with the bayonet lug with a "Q" proof on the left side. It many late production parts mixed with several unmarked parts, such as a round blued bolt, a stamped, adjustable rear sight, a DA-Q marked reblued operating slide, a late production unmarked M1 trigger housing with unmarked internal components. It also has a unmarked push button safety and a unmarked blued magazine catch. It has a "HI' marked walnut stock and a four rivet "IO" marked walnut handguard. There are no U.S. Government acceptance proofs which is correct as this was never accepted by the U.S. Army. It has a green canvas sling and a parkerized "IS" marked 15 round magazine.
