Description:

Model 1816 Type III Musket manufactured by A. Waters, Jr. of Millbury, Massachusetts. Waters manufactured 36,560 M1816 Muskets between 1817 and 1836. The musket has been converted from flintlock to percussion using a "Belgian" or "cone" conversion (external lock parts removed, holes filled, flash pan ground flush with the lock plate, barrel vent plugged, percussion nipple threaded into the barrel, and a new hammer installed). The "Belgian" conversion was the only type of percussion conversion performed by the U.S. National armories. The lock plate is marked "MILLBURY/1828" in two vertical lines behind the hammer. "US/A.WATERS" is stamped ahead of the hammer. An indented "P" proof mark is located on the top of the barrel. The left stock flat is stamped with two very faint oval ordnance inspection cartouches and the numeral "2".

Rating Definition:

Good plus. The metal surfaces are bright. The metal has a dull gray patina with scattered age discoloration. There is moderate flash pitting on the barrel between the lower barrel band and the tang; the barrel markings are faint with gouges at the breech. The lock has patches of dark age discoloration; markings are clear. The buttplate has a dark brown patina. The stock has been heavily sanded and refinished. Overall condition is good. The stock shows light to moderate handling wear; inspection marks on the left flat are visible but not legible. The ramrod is a replacement. The Model 1816 Bayonet is marked "US/WR" on the shank. The bayonet is in good overall condition with a dark age patina and some scattered pitting.
