Harpers Ferry Armory Muskets And Carbines 1841-Rifle 54
The Mississippi Rifle owes its name to the successful use of the weapon by a Mississippi regiment under the command of Jefferson Davis in the Mexican War. In its period of manufacture and use, military authorities even then regarded the Model 1841 as the best of its type. The barrel was blue with casehardened lock and hammer and brass fittings. It is equipped with a brass blade front sight and a V-notch rear. The left rear of the barrel is marked "AW / P" and "V / P / eagle head". The lock is marked with the "eagle/U.S." in front of the hammer and " HARPERS / FERRY / 1846" behind the hammer. Full straight grip stock with brass patchbox and buttplate. The ram rod is a replacement.

Lot 3
Springfield Armory U.S. 1879 Rifle 45/70 Govt.
This is a very nice example of an original early production M1879 Springfield trapdoor rifle. The top of the breech block is the correct low arch model that is marked "U.S. MODEL 1873". It has the three click tumbler and the lock plate is marked with the large American Eagle and "U.S SPRINGFIELD", the barrel has the correct "VP" proof over the Eagle Head proof with the letter "P" below that. It has the late features like the 1879 pattern Buckhorn rear sight with the range markings on the side and correctly marked with the blade front sight. It appears to be a transition model that has the earlier two-piece trigger guard with the sling swivel on the front of the trigger guard, smooth trigger, and the smooth buttplate with no trapdoor. The stock is the correct short wrist version that has a boxed "SWP 1882" cartouche on the left side and a circled script proof in the grip area. It is complete with an original cleaning rod under the barrel.
