Description:

M1847 Artillery Musketoon with "1847" dated lock. The M1847 Artillery Musketoon was issued to foot artillery batteries prior to the Civil War; total production was 3,359 pieces. The musketoon has a 26-inch, .69 caliber, smoothbore barrel with a bayonet lug on the bottom. Furniture is iron. The lock plate is marked: "SPRING/FIELD/1847" in three vertical lines behind the hammer and has an Eagle and Shield motif over "U.S." ahead of the hammer. Left side of the barrel is stamped with "Eagle Head/P/V" proof and inspection marks parallel to the bore. The final inspection mark on the left stock flat has been obliterated by wear. "U.S." and rack number "7" are stamped on buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Metal parts have a brown patina with light surface texturing and flash pitting on the bolster. Lock markings are visible. The ramrod is a replacement. The stock is in fair condition. The upper barrel band is secured in place by a screw and there are a number of pinned stock repairs and several dents that have been filled with putty. The stock has been heavily sanded. The action is tight.
