Description:

This is a very nice example of an original early production M1879 Springfield trapdoor rifle. The top of the breech block is the correct low arch model that is marked "U.S. MODEL 1873". It has the three click tumbler and the lock plate is marked with the large American Eagle and "U.S SPRINGFIELD", the barrel has the correct "VP" proof over the Eagle Head proof with the letter "P" below that. It has the late features like the 1879 pattern Buckhorn rear sight with the range markings on the side and correctly marked with the blade front sight. It appears to be a transition model that has the earlier two-piece trigger guard with the sling swivel on the front of the trigger guard, smooth trigger, and the smooth buttplate with no trapdoor. The stock is the correct short wrist version that has a boxed "SWP 1882" cartouche on the left side and a circled script proof in the grip area. It is complete with an original cleaning rod under the barrel.

Rating Definition:

Fine condition overall with 60% of the faded original blue finish remaining on the barrel with the balance thinning and turning a light plum/brown patina. The breech block has 20% of the case colors remaining mostly directly on top in the center of the breech block and in the protected areas. The lock and hammer have 60% of the original blue finish just thinning with a gray patina look. The trigger guard and trigger plate have 60% of the blue finish mostly in the protected areas with the balance a gray/brown patina. The stock is in very good condition overall with the typical minor pressure dents, dings and scratches overall from light field use with a good clear cartouche. A very nice representative example of a early 1879 Trapdoor rifle.
