Description:

The well-known South African gunsmith John Hayton engaged the services of William Greener in 1858 to produce these iconic cape rifles. The Boers particularly liked the extreme range, flat trajectory and accuracy of Greener’s two groove rifle barrels and found the combination of a rifled barrel and smoothbore barrel in one gun suited their needs. William Greener entrusted the production of these cape rifles to his son, William Wellington. For further reading please see Graham Greener, “The Greener Story”, pp. 11-12. With damascus barrels, 20 bore and 52 bore, the right barrel being smoothbored, the left rifled, each engraved with a decorative narrow band of stylized running foliage at the breech end. Broad raised rib with grooved sides to take a detachable ladder sight with distance increments marked from “1” to “20”, blued rear sight of one low standing block and six folding leaves each with platinum inlaid centre line, and signed “JOHN HAYTON GRAHAMS TOWN 6313” towards the breech within a silver inlaid border. Blued border and scroll engraved patent breeches and standing breech. Border and scroll engraved sidelocks each with blued hammer and signed “JOHN HAYTON”. Furniture including blued pistol grip trigger guard and hinged patch box cover, each with border and scroll engraving and respectively a vignette of a hunting dog and a running buck. Figured walnut half length stock with checkered grip and forearm, the underside of the butt with blank silver shield shaped initial escutcheon and blued sling eye, the corresponding sling eye fitted beneath the central ramrod pipe. Brass and iron mounted wooden ramrod. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
