Description:

Winchester's large caliber Model 1886 was designed by the legendary John Moses Browning. Browning's design refined by Winchester's team was capable of firing more powerful cartridges than any Winchester repeater before making it an excellent big game rifle, but production was still very limited compared to Winchester's smaller rifles like the Model 1892 and 1894. Only 160,000 were manufactured between 1886 and the end of production in 1935 compared to 1,000,000 Model 1894s already manufactured by 1927, and 1,004,675 Model 1892s manufactured before production was halted in 1941. The earlier 1886s, especially high condition rifles with stunning original case colors like this one, are highly sought after and valuable firearms. The factory letter indicates this beautiful rifle was serial numbered on September 3, 1892, and is recorded as a rifle in .45-90 with a 1/2 octagon barrel, plain trigger, and a checkered pistol grip stock with shotgun butt and was received in the warehouse and shipped on October 15, 1892, in order 7109. It was repaired on December 7, 1895, in order 2318. It is in a very attractive special order deluxe configuration and is chambered in one of the most powerful and desirable calibers available in the model, the .45-90 W.C.F. cartridge. The top flat of the special order part octagon barrel is marked with the two-line address and the "45-90 W.C.F" caliber marking at the breech. The model designation is marked on the upper tang, while the lower tang has the two-line patent dates and the serial number. The left side of the lower tang is marked "370 S XX", with "370" repeated inside the stock inlet and buttplate. It is fitted with a full complement of Lyman sights including a beaded blade front sight, two-leaf rear sight, and tang mounted peep sight. It is mounted with a very finely figured, H-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with an ebony insert and a smooth steel shotgun buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retains 95% plus of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to a smooth grey patina, primarily on the magazine tube and buttplate. 85% plus of the vibrant original case colors remain with the balance a silvery-grey patina, mostly on the bottom of the receiver. 60% of the original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The wood is also excellent with a few scattered light handling marks, crisp checkering, and retaining almost all of the varnish. Mechanically excellent. A very attractive special order Winchester deluxe Model 1886 rifle in the ever-desirable .45-90 W.C.F. that would make a fantastic addition to your collection!
