Manufactured in 1888, this is a solid representative example of a documented, factory engraved, nickel and gold plated Colt Model 1877 Thunderer revolver. According to Colt historian R.L. Wilson, approximately 475 Model 1877 Thunderers were factory engraved per the factory records. The included factory letter states the revolver was shipped to E.C. Meacham Arms Co. of St. Louis, Missouri, on September 5, 1888, with a 4 1/2 inch barrel, nickel finish with gold plated cylinder, factory engraving, and stocks not listed. The engraving is consistent with patterns used by Cuno Helfricht and his shop: mostly floral scrollwork on punch dot background along with fan motifs, zig-zag lines, and dots. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address with the acid etched panel "COLT D.A. 41" on the left. The three-line patent dates is marked on the left of the frame. The trigger guard is stamped "41 CAL" on the left side. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard, back strap, and rear face of the cylinder ("670"), and the assembly number "451" is marked inside the loading gate. The revolver is fitted with a set of replacement pearl grips.
